The Department of Mine Surveying

The History of Establishment

The Department of Mine Surveying was established on 10 September 2007. It is one of the structural departments of the Faculty of Mining and Ecology. The aim of the Department establishment is support of the study process within the Specialty “Mine Surveying”.

The Department provides students’ education by the Educational Direction “Mining” – Bachelor Level and by the Specialty “Mine Surveying” – Specialist Level.

The Engineer-surveyor provides control of mining deposits development, accounting of complex extraction of natural resources, and also building of open-pit and underground mining constructions; estimates processes of rocks and surface movements, develops of activities for protection of its harmful influence.

Mine Surveying is brunch of mining science and technique. It provides space-geometrical measurements in the Earth interior and also on the surface (grass) including its further representation on the plans, maps and profiles by mining and geological prospecting works.

Taking into account considerable development of mining industry in Zhytomyr region, experience in mining engineers’ training, lack of educational institution with necessary field of study Specialty “Mine Surveying” was introduced in 2003 at the Faculty of Mining and Ecology. (Previously the Department of Geotechnology and Industrial Ecology was responsible for students’ study within the Specialty “Mine Surveying”).

Scientific Activity

The Department has a PhD program in the Specialty 05.15.01 “Mine Surveying”. During 2013-2014 academic year the teachers of the Department of Mine Surveying participated in 16 scientific conferences including 7 abroad. In 2013-2014 there were 49 theses and scientific articles published , including 4 in International scientific-metric databases (Scopus, Webometrics etc.).

The department conducts research in the following areas:

  • geometrization of decorativeness, blocking and fracturing array of decorative stone in order to optimize its production process (Assoc. Prof. Kotenko V.V., Assoc. Prof. Iskov S.S.);
  • mathematical modeling of natural forms of separate stones to improve methods of estimating reserves of decorative stone (Senior lecturer Mamray V.V.);
  • improving methods of estimating reserves of decorative stone and quality control of the final product of block quarries to minimize losses through photogrammetric methods (Assoc. Prof. Sobolevskyi R.V., Senior lecturer Levytskyi V.G.);
  • optimization of mathematical processing of surveying measurements through the use of fractal analysis (Assoc. Prof. Panasyuk A.V.);
  • quality management of rubble stone and of crushed stone deposits of raw materials in the quarries of nonmetallic building materials (Vashchuk A.N.);
  • spatial and geometric measurement of disjunctive violations in an array of decorative stone (Horelikova V.V.);
  • development of methods for assessing quantitative and qualitative parameters of amber deposits for their geometrization (Kovalevych L.A.);
  • geometrization of qualitative and quantitative indicators of placer deposits to improve the efficiency of extraction and processing (on example of Zlobytskyi deposits of ilmenite) (Bashynska M.E.);

Faculty staff takes active part in international and republican scientific and practical conferences. Among the main are the following:

  • National Conference for undergraduate, master and PhD students "Contemporary Problems of Ecology and Geo-technology" (Zhytomyr);
  • National scientific-practical on-line conference for undergraduate and graduate students, young scientists dedicated to the Day of Science (Zhytomyr);

International Relations

Mining and Ecology Faculty and the Department of Mine Surveying is actively involved into cooperation with foreign educational institutions and agencies.

One direction of the cooperation is the organization of educational trips for students to the foreign universities and institutes.

On 14-25 of June 2009 the best 3rd year students of specialty "Mine surveying" and "Mining" under the guidance of teachers: Mamray V.V. and Levitsky V.G., visited three mining German universities: Technical University of Dresden, Technical University "Freiberg Mining Academy" and the Technical University Clausthal-Tselerfeld. The trip was funded within the framework of DAAD program "Training and study tour group of students to Germany".

ZSTU has a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Science and Technology "Mining and Metallurgical Academy" in Krakow (Poland). Mining and Ecology Faculty and Department of Mine Surveying of ZSTU actively collaborates with the Faculty of Mining and Geo-engineering of Krakow "Mining and Metallurgical Academy".

During the recent years there have been a couple of visits of undergraduate and post-graduate students to both universities:

  • In 2011 3rd year students of specialty "Mine surveying" and "Mining" visited the partner university under the supervision of Mamray V.V., Levytskyi V.G., Bashynska M.E.
  • In 2012 the group of students and teachers from the Polish University visited ZSTU.

The staff of the department participates in the “ Krakow international conference for young scholars”. In 2012 and in 2013 the representatives of the department took part in this conference which was held at the premises of University of Science and Technology "Mining and Metallurgical Academy" in Krakow.

Representatives of the department take active part in the individual mobility programs.

In August 2011 senior lecturer Mamray V.V. won the scholarship in "Swedish Institute" program and participated in summer school at the University of Technology "Blekinge" (Sweden).

Undergraduate and post-graduate students and teachers of the department had an opportunity to participate and to win the funding for studying and doing internships abroad within the framework of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine 2201250 «Training, internships and professional development of undergraduate students, post-graduate students, scientific and pedagogic staff abroad»:

  • PhD students Kovalevych L.A. and Horelikova V.V. studied at the Department of open cast mining, at the Technical University "Freiberg Mining Academy" (Germany) in 2012-2013 academic year;

Teaching staff of the department annually participates in international conferences. Thus, annual participation of teachers and post-graduate students in the International Forum of miners at the National Mining University (Dnepropetrovsk) has already become traditional. Teaching staff takes part in the International scientific conference of students, graduate students and young scientists "Ecology. Human. Society" at the National Technical University of Ukraine" KPI "(Kyiv), the scientific conference" Theory and practice of mining, processing and use of natural stone" at the Magnitogorsk State Technical University (Russia).

In addition to the mentioned above, the faculty and the department is constantly working on gaining individual mobility grants, projects’ preparation for the different international programs.
